I hope you are all doing well in these crazy times. This post serves as an update to VFW events as well as guidance on holding Post meetings and elections. Guidance is provided per VFW National Headquarters Executive Order #2 and Executive Order #2 Frequently Asked Questions.
The following VFW Events have been canceled and will not be rescheduled:
- Department of PA State Convention (June 17 – 20)
- National Convention (July 18 – 23)
Since the National convention has been canceled, National HQ has suspended the requirement to pay convention delegate fees for the year, however, Posts must still elect Delegates per section 222 of the National Bylaws. These delegates will be used for voting at District meetings in the coming year.
So far, the following District events are still on, but may need to be canceled or postponed in the future:
- District 21 Picnic – (Saturday, June 27th – Elicker’s Grove, Spring Grove)
- District 21 Testimonial – (rescheduled to Sunday, June 28th – Post 5265, Spring Grove)
- York Fair (July 24 – August 2)
Per Executive Order #2, Districts are encouraged to hold their annual convention and election prior to June 14th. Per this directive, the District 21 meeting originally scheduled for Sunday, May 17th has been rescheduled to Sunday, June 7th at Post 5265, Spring Grove. Based on the projected phase for reopening Pennsylvania as of June 7th, we will either hold a regular meeting in Spring Grove and/or modify attendance to allow participants to attend online via Zoom. All Posts and other members of the Governing Body, as defined in section 404 of the National Bylaws, will have the opportunity to be represented in the meeting, either in person or electronically via Zoom. If a regular meeting is held, we still plan to do the Memorial Service at 1:00 pm and the meeting at 2:00 pm. Additional information will be sent closer to June 7th as to how the meeting will be conducted.
Per Executive Order #2, Posts are encouraged to hold elections prior to July 24th if they are able. For Posts that do not hold an election prior to this date, the officers will roll up in succession per the National Bylaws with additional officers being elected at the next regular meeting. As a reminder, while your canteen must remain closed for now, with the exception of providing carryout food, you may still hold meetings of 10 or less people as long as you are following guidelines put out by the CDC and through the PA Governor’s office. The 10-person limit is increased to 25 as your region moves into the yellow reopening phase.
As with most things recently, please remain flexible and understand that there may be changes and additional guidance as Pennsylvania moves through the reopening phases. I will update everyone as quickly as possible when something changes.
Please pass this information to other officers in your Post that may not have access to email or this website.
Yours in Comradeship,
VFW PA District 21
